In her novel project »Schlucken«, Franziska Winkler tells the story of a family with both deaf and hearing members. She also writes about the violence that deaf children experienced in boarding schools in the GDR. Spanning three time periods, the novel traces how these experiences are imprinted on their bodies and relationships across generations. The work is based on interviews conducted in sign language, archival research, and the author’s own family history as a hearing daughter of deaf parents.
