Dance-Performance
In this piece, sweat becomes the currency of dance work. The deal: within 30 minutes, performer Katrina Elizabeth produces half a liter of it. If she fails to do so, the audience receives coupons for various services such as cooking, cleaning and babysitting. By performing a series of high-intensity exercises and movement phrases she attempts to produce and collect the prescribed amount of sweat. With this high-stakes performance we subvert capitalism, notions around disgust, and voyeurism in celebration of resilience, community, and empathy. For OUTNOW! 2023 the original script was updated to reflect the financial realities of dancers based in Bremen. This one‘s for you!
Katrina E. Bastian (she/they) is a hyper-empathy brutalist using endurance-based dance to make choreography that values the body as a vehicle for authentic expression. Seamlessly navigating between improvisation and set choreographic material she emphasizes the »body under pressure« as resilient and a source of ultimate knowing. »Soliloquy in Sweat« premiered at Experimental Dance Week Aotearoa in December 2020 and was awarded the »Best Performance Dance Award« (Auckland Fringe 2021) and the »Best in Fringe Award« (NZ Fringe 2021), among others.
